week 3: Pros and Cons of using movies to help students understand Mental Disorders!


In my opinion, I love the idea of using movies to help students to understand psychological disorders because they can a great learning tool.

Pros:
The positive aspects of watching these movies are they can be a wonderful  reinforcement which can help expand learning beyond the textbook and lectures given in the class room. A great movie can assist an individual in get a feel for what many people living with mental illness feel. A great movies can allows us students to have a glimpse of the “clinical picture” of a client with a mental health disorder.
For student such as myself who are visual learners, movies can be a great tool for my processing and understanding. Movies are also at times way more interesting then just the textbook or class work. they can give you great insight at the end of the day.

Cons:
At times through, the use of movies are often an exaggeration of reality and one may not get the opportunity to really see/assess the true clinical picture of a mental disorder. In that case, a student will not get the opportunity to see the true sign and symptoms of a particular disorder which will be a missed opportunity to learn what to look out for. When a student has the opportunity to see a character play a good role, they can really see some noticeable symptoms that can be picked up to help those we encounter in our everyday lives. We can help our family and friends by studying a good written movie/role. I have not seen a great movies where the focus has been placed on nursing interventions for the client when they are admitted and ongoing treatment. Movies can also be long at times. A good movie can be a great learning movies but cannot be reliable tool of study.

  1. There are many pros and cons of using movies to assist students to understand psychiatric disorder. Each time student hears and read about signs and symptoms and clinical presentation of mental illness but never gets a chance to actually experience it. The pros of using movies are that, it helps to visualize the characteristic of certain psychiatric disorder such as schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Using movies helps to illustrate the behaviors one would see in a patient with a certain psychiatric illness.

    The cons about using movies to assist student is that, movies may over-exaggerate the presentation of the illness, and also focus on negative aspect of having a psychiatric disorder. Overall, movies are a very useful tools to illustrate the presentation of mental illness to students.

  2. I think that using movies as a learning tool to help students have a better understanding of psychiatric disorders is good for students especially visual learners. Most people find movie time to be exciting and fun but some people still don't like to watch movies.
    Pros: It helps students to see and have a better understanding of how the psychiatric disorder affects patients involved in the movie. It stays afresh in the memory because they can always reflect on the pictures of the movie in their mind. It is an avenue that helps students learn in a comfortable environment not necessarily in the classroom with the teacher.
    Cons: some students may misunderstand the message of the movie. For students that are not visual learner, it may be difficult for them to comprehend and may end up being confused. In most case, what is shown on the movie is not the reality of life but modified to show the good aspect only.

  3. In my opinion I think that movies are an excellent way to assist students with the understanding of the psychiatric mental health experience.As with anything there are pros and cons.

    Pros:
    The Pros would be that it gives you a better understanding of the whole mental health experience. It allows you to have a visual to relate to what you may read in the text book, and it also provides a different way of learning instead of always being lectured to for hours at a time. watching movies allows you to actually see what that individual with bipolar or schizophrenia, or anxiety may be going through it gives you a clinical picture of the disorders and a fun way of learning especially if you are a visual learner.

    Cons:
    The cons to watching movies as a way to assist students with the understanding of mental health experiences are that sometimes movies may not give the true picture of how a disease is, they may be over exaggerated or they may not give the true signs and symptoms of the illness which could confuse the student if it does not match with what the textbook is saying.
